Hi,

I have a Borg Warner 4-speed manual transmission. There is a slow leak at the tailshaft where the drive shaft slides in. I assume my output shaft seal on the transmission needs replaced. Does the transmission have to come apart to replace this seal or can it be done easily with everything still together?

Thanks for the help,
John Thomas

You can remove the rear housing off the tranny while it is under the car with a little bit of effort but it is doable. Also some have (with the proper tool) been able to remove the seal while the rear housing is still attached. In either case the drive shaft get removed. If you do it as per my first suggestion you might want to remove the oil from the tranny for you need to remove the tranny support cross member and tilt the tranny/engine down in the back in order to slide off the rear housing.
