Hi All,

I recently received a job offer to work at Ft. Leavenworth. I'm a military intel guy, my wife is a tech at the VA Hospital in Dayton, OH where we'd be moving from. I am trying to convince my wife we should move to Kansas or even West Missouri area for this job. She's worried we'll move from, as she calls it, "one hell-hole to another". The way I see it, Dayton and Kansas City are both off I-70 so I imagine seasons are similar, cost of living is about the same, but moving to Leavenworth is a $25K boost in salary. In Dayton, my Wife wakes up, goes to the gym, then to work and back home. Weekends were grocery shopping maybe light shopping at the mall and back home. The 6 years we've lived in Dayton she hasn't made any friends and she's okay with that, very independent. Here's where I need help. What is fun and exciting about Leavenworth, KS/Kansas City, MO area that I can use to convince my wife we're not moving to a "hell-hole"?
I'm already convinced so if you're a guy reading this can you get input from your wife/girlfriend please? I appreciate any and all input. Thank you,

Bart

Leavenworth has the Carosel Museum--fun for the kids. Kansas City is only about 25 minutes away. It has the Plaza (very nice shopping/dining), the Power district (clubs, outdoor concerts), Sandstone ampitheater (Concerts), Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, Kemper Contemporary Art Museum, Casinos, Nascar track, Royals baseball, Chiefs, KU is nearby, UMKC, Smithville Lake, and more. You can also take a train from KC to Hermann Missouri for the wine festival. I think the Kansas City area is a great place to live--however, I probably wouldn't live "in" Leavenworth--my in-laws live there and I would seek some property closer to Smithville, but that's just me.

Omaha is less than 3 hours north (Henry Doorley Zoo, Nebraska Furniture Mart, SAC Museum). Des Moines is 3 hours away, but I can't think of a reason to go there. Colorado skiing is about 7 hours west on I-70. Lake of the Ozarks is about 2 1/2 hours east...

I could make the move if the weather didn't suck (compared to Southern California).

Thanks Dave and ALL. I hoped to get some real life knowledge of the area. I work with an Army CAPT out here that was telling me good things about the area. I haven't heard many negatives except for the weather. Coming from Monterey, I understand your argument not to move away from California. I'd love to get back there myself.

There are also some good swap meets--Lawrence has one every Spring and then there is one (was one?) in Kansas City that was held near downtown in a parking structure. There was one in Lincoln Nebraska (about 2 1/2 Hours away) around March that was also good. Another that comes to mind was near Des Moines--Greenfield Iowa? So there was car stuff too, but you said you didn't need to be sold so I didn't mention those. Let us know what happens.

Don't forget that Heartland Park Topeka is only an hour away and is a world class race facility! Maybe not good for wifey, but......

There's the shopping area in south KC IIRC, it's some kind of chick heaven for shopping.

Worlds of Fun in east KC is a fun amusement park.

The weather can be brutal in the winter, especially if you've never been around constant howling wind driven snow and sub zero temps.

I'm not too far from Leavenworth and have visited many times. My father in law is retired DOD and worked on the base up there. Weather can suck, hot humid in the summer and some very cold winters.
One of the things I like is being able to get out of town pretty quick. Just a few miles and your in farm country away from traffic. Great if you want to open your car up once in a while.

The area just south by the Kansas Speedway is being built up pretty well. I live just a few miles from there. New casino, water park soon to be a full resort, lots of shopping and a new soccer stadium.

People here are also pretty friendly.

I live here and your wife is right. It is moving from one **** hole to another. Taxes here are the second highest only to Mission Kansas. If you take the job look for a home in Platte City or Parkville area and commute. There are no shopping centers here. Most folks here drive to KC to shop. If you own a boat be prepared to call 911 when you get the property tax bill. I have family here buy I am now retired from the fort and ready to get out of here.
I don't know if you are coming as a DOD civilian or a contractor but be aware there are reductions in force going on and a lot of folks are going to be unemployed within the next near. I'd hate to see you move here and wind up without a job anywhere.
There isn't much to do around here. If you fish you will find most Missouri lakes full of bass, crappie, and catfish with a few Walleyes also. If you hunt there is decent pheasent hunting out west.
Kansas is a shall issue CCW state so you should be able to get your license a lot easier than in Ohio. If you do decide to come PM me and I will give you my number and help you if I can. Ray

Edit to add: Oops, I didn't realize this was a year old.
