:: This is the carby on my Fastback (351) should this thing still run with the plunger bizo missing and what effect will this be having on the performence of the car ?/

Does smell a bit of petrol . ::

Performance difference is negligable. That little poppet just keeps the bowl from venting gas to the atmosphere. It was put there to reduce emissions. Earlier carbs have a smaller hole on the angled part of the same boss. I would suggest, however, that you get the little poppet that goes there, if nothing else to keep gas from spilling on your engine during hard acceleration or braking. It comes in the carb kits. I have a couple I believe. I know you're a long way away, but I could send you one if you can't get one local.
