I am putting in Vintage A/C in my mustang and am having issues with the Monte Carlo bar. I had a curved one but bought a straight because of the clearance with the compressor. I now have a straight one but it does not fit either. I sits on top of the distributor and has no clearance.

Please see pictures!

Do I have to have a custom bar made or is there one off the shelf?

What distributor and cap are you using? I have a straight bar with stock dual point distributor and cap. I can remove the cap without removing the wires. It does touch the K&N open element filter...no biggie.

Does the bar flip around and attach the other way?...

I made a custom bar with a steering link and ends from Speedway. I used the end brackets from my standard MC bar and welded some ears on them. With a couple pins to hold the bar in place, I can pop the bar out in 30 seconds or less.

Good question. The angled portion of the bar brackets should follow the shock tower angle. However, that won’t cure a height problem.
The height isn't an issue if the bar isn't under the air cleaner. Look at the difference in the pictures above and on the web of the bar installed on other cars...

VERY nice design as long as there's no play and it really stiffens the aprons. Call it the La Viagra bar...

What you probably cannot see in the pictures is the polyurethane bushings that go between the bar ends and the ears welded to the brackets. There is no play. One nice thing is that the bar is RH threaded on one end and LH threaded on the other end so you can adjust length by simply twisting the main shaft. I am not concerned about the ends being a hinge connection as the welds on common MC bars do not provide any significant moment resistance.

From an engineering point of view, I am confident that is works as effectively as a standard MC bar.

Another possible solution: You could drop the engine down using RMP motor mounts...or some other mount that lowers it(admittedly...its a rather extreme solution, but if the others don't work its either that, or going with a custom curved bar, or deleting the monte-carlo bar...stock style bars barely catch the front edge of the shock tower anyway)

I have the curved bar and it hit the compresor. I just bent it up about 1/2” to get the necessary clearance. It was easy to do. I set the ends on blocks, and used my foot to bend it. Do it a little at a time until you get the needed clearance.

Ya that'll work, but then you have to get another engine cross member so the pan won't hit the oem x member.

I'm running a straight bar. Your bar is attached at the same height as mine to the brackets and I'm running the same air filter. On ny car though the bar is more in the middle of the filter and clears the cap by about a inch IIRC. I also have a Stealth intake. I suspected the problem is due to your motor mounts possibly. For the record 66 mounts.

The real question is. Are the curved Monte Carlo bars as strong as the straight ones? :wink:
From a structural point of view the answer is no, it is not as strong as a straight one. Perhaps the more appropriate question is: Is a curved bar strong enough to do what is intended? Given how many people run them with no complaints, the answer appears to be yes.
