Do you have 2 nearly triangular pieces that run from each shock tower to the firewall? A Monte Carlo bar runs between the 2 shock towers over the engine. The stock braces stiffen up the front end, I wouldn't take them off.

The engine photo has a export brace and a monte carlo bar. The monte carlo bar
is the strait one across the shock towers. They are not part of the suspention.
They both help brace up the car to keep it from flexing. This is a '65 but you get
the idea.
