Howdy all.

I have a 63 Ranchero with the original rear end in it (4 lug 6 cylinder type). It has a broken ring gear in it due to an idiot previous owner running a V8 in it.

Now that I have a 170 I6 back in it, I want to get going again. The original has a width between the backing plates of about 49".

I was given the rear out of (I think) a 67 Mustang. It has good gears in it, but the width between the backing plates is 54". It is too wide.

The local drive line shop wants way too much to fix the original one, so I was hoping to either find another one that will work, or make one good unit out of the two I have.

In what other vehicles would I be able to find a good rear end for a 6 cylinder 63 Ranchero? With the narrower axle length?

What are the odds that I would be able to move the good gears from one case into the original case? They sure look similar...

What kind of rebuild kit would I need to do that, and where would I get it?

Neither one has any ID Tag on it... Any other way to correctly identify these things?

Thanks!

From a long list posted here back in Feb 2001.
Axle flange to axle flange.
65-66 Mustang = 57.25"
75 Mustang II = 57.00"
57-59 Ranchero & station wagon = 57.25" (9")
66-77 Bronco = 58" (9")
64 Falcon = 58"

Well a 4 lug 8" from a 70-74 Maverick or Comet is 56.5" flange to flange. That would be closer than the similar 65-66 Mustang.

Do you have any salvage yards nearby with old cars?
They made a lot of the early Falcon's so it
shouldn't be too hard to find one. I know of three
yards here that have them.
There is a good Falcon website, TFFN, maybe you
could find someone nearby that has one.
