Hello all, I have located a supposed '68 390 4V local to me. I need to know what casting #'s etc to look for to verify that it is an actual 4V motor.

Good luck. Ford was miserable about putting codes on FE engines. I've seen them with nothing but the date. You're looking for a C8AE-A, but that covers 68-76. Start looking for the date. Does it have heads?

As noted many blocks have no casting number. As for other parts (if it is a complete engine) visible ones should be:

Intake - C8AE-9425-A w/S cast on one runner.
Exh Manifolds - C7OE-9430-C/C7OE-9431-A
Heads - C8AE-H
Distributor - C80F-D
Water Pump - C6AE-8505-B

If the date codes for all the parts are wihtin a few weeks of each othr its a good sign. Block generally predates the others in most cases.

I have not seen it yet, but it's supposed to be complete. I have to call the seller today to get more info on it. I know it's not a '67 and won't be #'s matching, but if it's compete and really a 4V I could live with it as long as the price is right. I am not going for a concourse restoration anyway. I will see if I can get the casting #'s from him and post them here for advice.

Thanks for all the help so far on all of my questions.
