The starter in my new Jeep (Ford starter, its a CJ, all the big three threw parts at it) drags. Actually sometimes it doesn't engage at all. is this just a matter of pulling it all apart, cleaning and reassembling. I don't want to buy a new starter as this was supposed to be a money making thing. As a little added info, this started after a good session in the mud and some good deep puddles (I had to, the thing has a 6" lift and 38" tires!). Also, a couple smacks with the hammer will get it to engage when it doesn't want to cooperate.

Again, any advice is welcome.

I had a '83 CJ 7, how I miss that beast. :: You can get a new starter from Canadian Tire real cheap. Why mess with the thing. It's bound to cut out in the middle of nowhere on you.
