I am still working on my friends 72 LTD Wagon, 351C/C-6. I noticed on the tailshaft of the tranny, there is this long bar bolted to it that projects about 8-12 inches past the end of the tranny, under the driveshaft. It is held on to the underside of the tranny, by 2 small bolts and is heavier than it looks. What is the point of this part, I can't see it stopping the driveshaft from falling out.

It is a counter balance needed (usually) because of trnsmission mount/support location.

It's allways been my understanding that the metal thingy your refering to is to lessen drivetrain vibrations or harmonics dampning.
