Besides the Mustang, Falcon, Comet, Maverick, were their any real super lights that had a 170 or 200 ( or smaller) inline six as a power plant. What was the smallest ford to have a V8 (not counting the Tiger or Cobra) Thinking of trying to warm up a I-6 this winter and put it in a small Ford for my 12 yr old for the track this spring. Looking for a good 1/4 mile beginner car that will give him some good experience without the problems big HP can get you into.

I think the smallest would have been the Ford Cortina. It was built overseas, I think...
I would recomend an early falcon, ie:'61-'63 body style. They were pretty small, and used the same parts as the Mustang for suspension, so performance suspension parts are easy to find. It will also take any six cylinder, and any transmission...
I can see it now, F.I. V6 from '98 Mustang with t-5 trans...Oh Yeah...

fordnut has a good idea. A 6cyl with a 5-speed. Quick of the line
and some top end to work with. Use a V8-8" rear and it will last
a long time. It could be the daily driver when it's time.

There are some kits to put a 5-speed and a in-line 6 together.

A header, a Flowmaster, Mustang suspension, front disc brakes
and it would be a fun little car.

A V8 could be slid in anytime.
SWMBO's daily driver is a '61 Ranchero with a 289 4-Speed. She
loves it. It's a lot of fun to drive.

it wouldn't be a ford inline 6 but you could consider AMC. Something like a hornet. AMC used some chevy engines in addition to there own.

At the car auctions escorts, and crown vic's often go for <$500. The early mustangs go pretty cheap if they look bad. The cars you listed are pretty old and are not all that common anymore.

I'm planning a T-5 swap into my BB6 early next year once I get all the pieces together. It oughta make my L6 Mustang puts a straight arrow through the angled hearts of 8 cylinder owners.
