On the left tailight panel, where the bumper sits, a bad clump of bondo stuff was under the paint. Once the bumper is mounted, you can barely see the problem, but I decided to see what the problem was. Yup, you guessed it: RUST! Ughhh.

Using a dremel, I carefully cut into the lower tailight panel, and found significant rust between the two pieces of metal. I had to cut back even more, but still found sandwiched rust. I was able to clean up the rust on the underlyiing panel, but didn't want to cut the panel beyond the underlying panel, as that would require welding a patch back in, ruining the interior paint in the trunk. I decided to patch it with Fusor, keeping the strength in the remaining factory spot welds and sealing the overlapping metal with seal seamer. Waiting 8 hours for the Fusor to set, I then used Icing to smooth over the patch:

At this point, I had to touch up some other parts of the car with epoxy primer, so I decided to go ahead and prime the patch:

Man, I hope I don't find any more of this stuff...I'm sick and tired of it! :(

Fusor,,,Icing??? Is this all names for Bondo and spot putty? Or is this something new? Remember I have been out of the car hobby for 4 or 5 years.

Fusor is an epoxy glue for sheet metal that is used now on assembly lines instead of welding. I believe the website is Lord Industries

Icing is a polyester finishing putty better than bondo, since it is waterproof.

Mid: Someone at the boby shop supply gave you bad info. Icing is not waterproof as it is polyester based. Icing is a thin bondo, thinner than the Rage that I use. The only filler that is waterproof is a fiberglassed bondo. Duraglass, Bondoglass, etc. or Metal to metal types. It is ok over a solidly filled area like your fusor panel or over a filler as a glaze, But if it comes in contact with water from behind it will absorb it-like any other poyester based filler.

By the time you have found and replaced all the original rust you found on midlife, you will be ready to start replacing the parts you put on to replace the rust at the beginning of the fight...its an endless circle
