I checked out an old book i dug up. It states not to use sealer on the threads of the pickup tube and to use a large cresent wrench against the tube to snug it up in the pump. I think I'll follow Pat's idea about sealer. It also states to level the pickup with the oil pan rails.
btw it is a 351C with the screw in pickup
