Personally, if I was living in your area (I live in a similar hi heat area in Central California), I'd be running 20W-50 or straight 50W in a vintage inliner during the summer...
IMO, synthetics are great for modern tightly sealed, computer controlled engines but with our old, loose, mediocre sealed Pony engines, I personally think it's a waste of money, at least for a pure synthetic which is pretty expensive IME.
Running a good coolant package, overflow recovery and 13-16 lb radiator cap can also help with hot weather reliability.
