It sounds as if you have the "65" type mounts. The "66" type are the "ear" type, instead of one bolt they have two metal flanges on the end.

Many VMFers that have the 65 type do the drilling and bolt treatment and then never have a problem after that.

Ah, I think you are correct. The 66 mounts are much more difficult to modify simply because there is not much room. On Mustang Steve's board a week or so back someone was attempting to modify a 66 mount with a bolt through support. It involved contersinking and thin heads I believe. Anyway, one could go there and search out the post and see what their options were.
