This question is in reference to both my floor jack as well as my friends hydraulic engine hoist. How and where do I check and or replenish the fluid in both items?

Yesterday I was putting away my friends engine hoist and lowered the boom down a little too far and too fast causing some hydraulic to squirt out the little hole on the side of the hydraulic barrel. Is there where I put the fluid in and if so, do I do it with the plunger totally extended outwards or while it is closed up with plunger all the way in?

There should be a small access plug somewhere on the main housing. If you are able to extend the cylinder all the way out with a load, you should have enough fluid. If you are unable to extend, it's because your fluid level is low. Add a little and check your stroke. Repeat as necessary. You want the reservoir to be full with the cylinder fully retracted.
