Excuse the description but it is the only way I can explain it: while setting the points, timing and idle mixture on the 289 I noticed an intermittent "phut(ffoot)" sound at the exhaust on both sides, if you listen it sounds nice and crisp but intermittently I hear this "phut" sound as if it has not fired correctly, the plugs look nice and grey, idle mixture or timing don't seem to make a difference, it seems to be more prevalent while the engine is warming up.

The motor is a stock 289, Autolite 4 barrel and stock ignition.

If this makes any sense at all then any tips would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
John......
