I am working on a 67 that looks to have an earlier steering box in it. I say this because the steering shaft seems to be integral to the box and doesn't come apart easily like the book says it should.

The tag reads:

SMB A

If this is a non-collapsable type of steering setup, is there any way to modify it into something a little safer? I don't want this 5 foot piece of metal punching through my chest in an accident...

Thanks,

matt k.

68 Mustangs had the collapsible column. One option is swap in the related parts from a 68. My understanding is that you'll need a 68 steering box, the 68 column, and a flexible coupler.
The wiring to the turnsignal switch is different and will need minor modification.
Others have done this swap, I'm drawing from their experience. I've just finished rebuilding a 68 box. When I get around to freshening up my swap meet 68 column then I'll be ready (I hope) to get this done on my 67.
If anybody can add more info, I'd appreciate it too.
