The power steering pump is making lots of oise and seems to be getting heavy in the steering . How do I diagnose the problem ? If the pump is knackered , is there any trick or special equipment required to replace it or is it a simple bolt off , bolt on job ??

Aussie,
You'll need a puller to get the pulley off. The new (rebuilt) pumps from supply houses here come with a bolt/washer combo to re-install. If the fluid is burned, be sure to purge the system.

OK,
1)Empty out all the p/s fluid from the pump and line (let them drain)
2)Re attatch all the lines to the pump
3)Fill the pump up to the full mark
4)On stands, turn the wheel to full lock left and right without the engine running
5)Add more fluid to the pump till it reads full again
6)Turn the wheels left and right again on stands without the engine running
7)Fill again, then take it off stands, start it, and turn full lock left and right, do not hold it at either lock.
8)Add more fluid and repeat as nescessary.
