Price Differences

Anyone else find it maddening how different pricing can be from one site to the next? As an example, I need to pick up a new differential cover gasket. If I look on Summit Racing, the Fel Pro RDS13270 is listed for $3.99. The exact same gasket, same part number, on CJ Pony Parts is $19.99. NPD, not certain it is exactly the same, but unlikely Fel Pro have more than one gasket, $6.05.

Normally, you could just say get the cheapest one. But, then you run into paying for shipping, as well ($11.99 Summit, $9.99 CJ Pony Parts, $12.95 NPD) . Summit is still the cheapest, but ...

I also want to pick up new hardware (nuts and washers). NPD I can't even find them, Summit say it is special order and CJ Pony has them for $21.

I think I will call Virginia Mustang and see if they have both in stock, gasket is $6 there and nuts/washers are $18 and take a little drive. About $24 for both the gasket and the nuts / washers. 80 mile round trip, I get about 22MPG in my daily driver, needs 93, so about $15 in gas. Ends up costing about the same as ordering from CJ Pony Parts, but potentially means getting them sooner.

Honestly, if CJ Pony Parts were at least reasonably similar pricing to the others, I would order from them, but $20 vs $6 or $4 is ridiculous. Doubly so when the nuts / washers are only $3 more than Virginia Mustang.

Call NPD and they'll find them for you. Honestly I've always used RTV and no gasket, no problem. Let the flaming begin...... lol

How about checking your local auto parts store for the gasket? Those parts are not vintage Mustang specific.

Well I imagine that diff gasket is going to sit in inventory at a mustang supplier a lot longer than it will at Summit, who supplies to a bigger market than just one model. Maybe NPD moves more of them.

For more generic parts like these (fel-pro gaskets, etc.) I use rockauto and add more items from the same shipping location, their shipping is usually ~$10 but their parts prices are way lower and they usually have multiple brands to pic from (favorite brand).

Otherwise I look on amazon for low price/ free shipping for singles or have my local O'reillys get it in same day or next for free (BWD ignition, fel-pro, etc.) if their price is close enough.

Maybe the thread will go political instead! 🤐

I also find it annoying when stores, particularly CJ's, purposefully obfuscate the part number and brand so you can't price and quality compare.

Honestly I've had very good luck at Orielly's for the common stuff. If they don't have it, they'll get it later that day or the next, and I have a Professional account, so pricing isn't usually an issue.

I've had good luck as well at Orielly's for common parts. Picked up Fel-Pro oil pan and valve cover gaskets from Oreily's not too long ago. Pricing was about the same as buying online. I've had good luck with Amazon too.

I'll third that. O'Reilly's is my go-to for common parts. I'm surprised what I can find for my 6 cylinder there! Wheel bearings, axle seals, gaskets, motor mounts, filters, etc.
I did a search for the subject gasket and our local AutoZone and O'Reilly's have it for $4.29. One has it in stock and the other you'd have to wait a day to pick it up at the store for no extra charge.

Yep, I have had success at O'Reilly's, Advance Auto and NAPA.

O'Reillys are actually pretty good for me, one just recently opened up and have slowly become my go to. Autozone here you can end up waiting 15+ minutes just to talk to an employee. The O'Reillys being new is typically quiet and they have usually had what I need there.

Interestingly, I did search there and got no results looking for "Differential Cover Gasket" that were under $16, but searching for that specific Fel Pro, does indeed show up as $4.29. I'll bet they have copper washers I can use as well.

If Oreilly’s doesn’t have the copper washers Copper Washer Assortment, 80 Piece
Oreillys and Advance are the first places I check before moving on to Summit, CJ, NPD, and Kentucky Mustang.
Since it is a standard gasket, check the local auto parts stores that will ship to store. Then a short drive to pick it up yourself.
Another source I don't think was mentioned was Rock Auto.
I check the part number on Amazon, $4.29. If you have a Amazon Prime membership, free. Anymore, what the Prime membership saves me on shipping alone is worth it. We also use it for the Prime TV which has a pretty good selection of shows and movies, many the big guys like HBO and Cinemax don't have.

Same $4.29 at O'Reilly's and pick up the next day.... I love NPD but there are some pieces that aren't "Mustang Specific" that you can just as easily buy locally.... I mean, would you order spark plugs from NPD?

If they were cheaper than available locally and I wasn't in a hurry, absolutely. The closest auto parts store to me is a 40 minute round trip, plus the time in the store, sometimes ordering online is simpler.

In this case, thanks to the poster above, I searched for the part number at O'Reilly's and will have it tomorrow. Odd that it didn't come up searching "differential cover gasket" though, and, my original point stands... Online price difference make no sense.
