I'm referring to the gasket that looks just like the bearing retainer plate on a 8" rear axle assembly. Is there just one gasket that goes between the bearing retainer plate and the outside surface of the rear drum backing (carrier) plate? Or does it go between the inside of the carrier plate and the axle housing flange?

Or is there actually two gaskets per side? Seems that the PO of our car might have had 1 gasket in each place. The shop manuals seems to also show two gaskets but I'm just wondering if the places I indicate are correct (one each side of the brake carrier plate).

You are correct there are 2 gaskets one on either side of the brake backing plate 1 between the plate and housing the other at the axle flange. ::

The two gaskets are different as one allows for venting. The gasket that allows for venting goes between the bearing retainer plate and the outside surface of the backing plate.
