on my 67 390 there is a blk or blue wire coming out of the firewall along with the square 4 pin connector (see pic). What does it do?
Thanks

On 67 and 68 that square 4 contact connector pair connects the underdash harness to the backup lights switch/neutral safety switch on the transmission. It should have two RED/BLU wires (NSS) and two BLK/RED wires (backup lights).

The single wire seems to be one of the BLK/RED wires from the square connector that was cut and then spliced to a non-stock wire. Does it look that way to you?

On the 4 wire connector, two of the wires go to the shifter for backup lights. Other two wires, (depending if a standard or auto) are the neutral safety wires. For a standard shift, no neutral safety so conn got a "loop wire" a jumper. For an auto trans, wires go to trans shifter switch.
