My 66 Mustang 302 is having trouble starting up sometimes. I have Pertronix, Holley 600. I installed new plugs today. Problem is when I've been driving & stop for say 30-60 minutes it won't fire right up. I have to press the gas and wind the starter till it fires (it won't fire unless I press the gas). Then I get black smoke out the pipes. It will fire up on the 1st turn of the starter in the mornings & if it sits for an hour or longer. I noticed a small bit of gas under the carb linkage on the drivers side of the intake, but not a noticable leak. The carb is 1 1/2 years old, Pretronix is 1 year old. Everything else wires, cap, button are 1 1/2 years old also.
Any ideas? Time for a carb rebuild?

Gosh I hope you get some educated answers to this. I've got exactly the same setup as you in my 66, and I'm seeing the same thing! I look forward to the wisdom of VMF coming through for us!

Either that or the gas is boiling. After you shut it down for a couple of minutes listen to the carb for the boiling sound. That could cause the gas to run past the needles and make it hard to start. Maybe just need a spacer under the carb.
