The following is from a guy on another car forum:

A friend of a friend here in the Bay Area recently told me about a Mustang fastback which sounds like it might (emphasize, might) be a genuine factory AFX car. The car is a manual trans car and nearly a stripped shell, and as of right now I don't know if it is a 67 or 68 (don't have any other good pics yet) It is not known if the car is for sale. I am just wondering if this may be a car of more historical significance than is currently realized, so I'm wondering if anyone here may have heard of the driver, or the car?

It has this placard riveted to the dash sheetmetal:

A google search didn't turn up anything...

Re: are Fastback found?

I agree with SAC69 that the dash looks like a pre-67 mustang and never heard of one of those with a 429 out the factory door. Kinda looks like someone just decided to make their own custom plate I guess. Maybe when you get a couple better pics would be great.

The term "Cobra Jet" had yet to be coined in 1966, and the odd/crude placement of the tag seems like something the owner would've done.

There may be a good story behind the car, but it'll have to come from more than just that tag IMHO...

But the car name and owner's name is alot of info to get started digging with.

I'll also bet that the owner created the tag and it looks like a 65-66 dash.

We need more photos for a more informative thread.

I agree. I think this was a privateer made up car.

The A/FX class in NHRA & AHRA was kaputt by the time the Cobra Jet came out.

Another possibility is the car is a New Old made up fake. Can't find a cool old "Barn Find"?? The new trend is to make your own fake barn find car-very popular with the hot rod and gasser crowd. Find old crudgy patina speed equipment, weather your paint, create rust etc.

I agree, It was probably made up in the early 70's to early 80's.....A private driver..

Definately not vintage 60's. That much is for sure.

The 429 didn't come out until 1967 and was installed only in Thunderbirds and Lincolns.

Funny thing about these "Finds". There are more "registered" big block 1967 427 Vettes on the road today than Chevy ever built back in '67.
A real case of Caveat Emptor, a guy has gotta know his facts when finding or buying one of these. As said above, 429's and Cobra Jets just did not exist in 65-66, no matter WHO raced them. Just the thought of a 429 in a 65-66 Mustang has me rolling my eyes!

Right, the 429 CJ & SCJ came out first in the Torinos in 1970. Mustang and Torinos in 1971.
The only car I've questioned Myself about was about time the 1970 Mustangs were hitting the showrooms, In Louisville,Ky there was a 1969 Mustang Sportsroof 428SCJ DragPack painted "Grabber Blue" with the same black stripping as Larry Shinodas White 428 CJ car only it had the words "Street Boss" where the '69 "Boss 302" letters would have been as well as a rear deck mach1 style tape stripe also with "street Boss 428". had Mag Star wheels, shaker hood. This was a professional job. Grabber blue was not available on regular 1969 mustangs . also It had Michigan MFG tags and was on the Front lawn @ Bob Frensley Ford. Factory Promo Car ? who really Knows. Marti might have Info.TASCA ford came out with a Red Boss 429 "Street Boss" Race Car around that time.

That's a '66 dash pad. It'll need new wiper blades and plenty more.

Looks like a 66 with a big block setting in the engine bay. Shock towers have been removed. Car looks restorable to me.

I don't know anything about the AFX race cars, but I doubt that they came with horns, a heavy stock front bumper and grill, Camaro tail lights, a hacked up transmission tunnel and a steel hood with a delaminated fiberglass "AFX" hood scoop. Just my .02...I suppose I could be wrong! :bs:

I think this one must be the prototype for the AFX cars. Was the cigarette lighter on option for race cars back then?

429's were used in Pro Stock and the car doesn't have the right set up for that. Its a wanna be A/FX car.

An A/FX car should be set up: Torsion leaf springs running from the lower control arm, forward to a mounting point on the bottom of the radiator support. Right-hand drive Australian Falcon gearbox attached to the outside of the framerail. Rear wheels should be relocated forward three inches, reducing the factory 108 inch wheelbase to 105 inches. The forward portion of the wheel openings were modified to fit 10 inch M&H slicks, effectively concealing the three inch relocation. The front wheel location was unchanged. A crossmember was attached ahead of the rear axle, providing a mounting point for the adjustable 31-inch Thunderbolt style traction bars. Four speed toploader transmission, and 4.89 geared 9-inch rear axle. Fiberglass hood, fenders, front bumper, doors, and fixed plexiglass side windows.
