Since I seem to be a little post happy this evening ( can't seem to sleep lately ) I thought I would give an update on my brother potential Shelby trade. My brother is looking to trade his 70 Boss 302 for a 67 GT-500 that needs some re-assembly. The owner of the Shelby was under the impression that the car originally came with a 390. After a little investigation the owner was able to determine that the engine was indeed a 428 PI. My brother talked to the fellow at Cobra Automotive and they told him to pop one of the freeze pulgs ( not sure which one ) and behind said freeze plug should be a cast "428". Well , I own a 428 CJ and I had never heard that one before. But sure enough there was a "428" behind the freeze plug , go figure. I had told him to check the Top Loader that came with the car to see if it was a Big spline or a Small spline. It turned out to be a Big spline so things seem to make sense. My brother also received E-mail from a fellow named Copec ( I think it was Dick Copec ) that was well aquainted with Carrol Shelby. Well , Mr Copec said that ford did indeed run out of 428's and did put some 390's into GT-500's , but that was in 68. So the mystery seems to be solved.

Those '67-'70 big block and musclecar wars between the Big Three have such great sideline stories attached that are always fun to hear about. Production shortages and spare-part applications are interesting to note, and even car owners themselves end up finding out some of the trivia years later which makes ownership all the more appealing.

Think you'll find the spelling is Kopec. (Rick would enjoy that)

Glad to hear you don;'t have a 390.... and you could have save some time is you would have read my note a few days ago "that ford did indeed run out of 428's and did put some 390's into GT-500's , but that was in 68" ;)
