In regards to reliability I've had the same 650 double pumper on my little 306 since about 1992! I have learned to definitely drain the fuel every winter to save the orings on the needle and seat due to the ethanol in gas now. I also learned that the best thing I ever did for the carb was installing a new gas tank without 50 years of crud in it. Something that can affect any carb and probably a prerequisite for any vintage mustang.

As far as vac secondary versus double pumper when I first built the engine I had my old 600 cfm holley 1800 vac secondary carb on it. It would run out of fuel and refuse to rev. If you remember those they had a single fuel inlet in the front and fed the secondaries with a little tube and I surmised that caused the problem. A 600 double pumper with a dual feed would probably work fine too.
