I have 3.73 gears in my 9in posi, Can I change just the crown gear with a higher crown gear (more teeth) and leave the pinion gear to get a higher rear end for more top end or do I have to change both pinion and crown?
Absolutely not. a 9 inch in the 3.00 - 2.79 are very easy to find and will give you the top end you are looking for. Should be able to get a good one in the $125 -$175. non-posi of course Gary
The ring and pinion gears have to be replaced at the same time. The depth and thickness of the teeth will keep them even coming close going together not to mention the wear. Denver
I do not know all of the gear teeth numbers for the pinion but to answer your question and this is not from experience as long as the the number of teeth on the pinion matches the one you want to swap the ring gear with then it should work. I agree with everyone else and would not try this.
