1. There doesn't seem to be a fill plug on the 9 inch in my 69 Mach. Do I put oil in it through the vent hole on the axle tube? How do I know when there is enough?

2. Where is the fill plug on the 4 speed toploader in my 69 Mach?

I just want to check these things since I might be driving the car tomorrow. Yaaaay!! It sat for 10 years and all...you know. I'm coming down to the final touches for it to be road-worthy!

Sometimes the plug is on the pot, sometimes its on the housing. If your not finding it on the back of the housing, try looking on the pot just above the yoke. Its full when the oil reaches the bottom of that filler hole.

On the Top Loader pull the spedo cable & gear and fill it there in that hole. Again, its full when the oil starts to creep back out.

I don't know about pulling the speedo drive from the transmission to fill it with oil. I have never heard of that....
Should be a square plug on passenger side of main case. Take this plug out, and fill to the bottom of the hole.
If you have a posi-trac, be sure that you use the right oil if you have to put some in....

I'm not sure about the 9 inches, but with the 8 inches the fill plug was on the housing through '66, thereafter it was in the pumkin. If you use a '67 & later case with a '66 and earlier pumpkin you won't have a fill plug at all (I have a '74 pumpkin with a '66 case and have 2 fill plugs). I don't see why using the vent tub wouldn't work (would probably take a while), but if you drain the rear and fill it according to the shop manual you should be fine. BTW, there are 2 pints in a quart (just did this last week /forums/images/icons/smile.gif )
