I'm in the process of restoring a 71-73 ram air hood and noticed there is a heavy buildup of surface rust on the inside surface of the underside support panel. I would like to be able to seperate the panels to get to the rust. Has anyone had any luck doing that? Should I even attempt it or just try to somehow treat between the panels with a rust remover like phosphoric acid? Thanks for any help...

You could use POR-15's metal ready (acid etch) and keep soaking the underside down with it . The surface rust should all get eaten up and then you can coat it with POR-15 / topcoat the POR with etch primer and finish in your body color .

Several people on the Thunderbird forum have priased Evapo-Rust. I have never used it but it looks promising. Claims to non-toxically remove rust while not harming any plastic or paint around it.

Phosphoric acid in a spray bottle. I use it on the inside of doors and frame rails. Good stuff.
