I came across old photos that I took of a Galpin designed RumbleSeat for a 1967 Mustang. I guess only 2 were made? Not sure how I would feel about actually sitting in it. Looks like the gas filler tube was rerouted to accommodate the modification. There are a couple of other threads regarding this, but all of the photographic links are broken.

By todays standards, that looks scary, but probably not so much back in the 60's.

Until the 80's or so it was common place to see kids, little kids, riding in the back of pickup trucks too so that would not be far fetched. Don't know that i would want to be sitting on top that gas tank if you get rear ended!

Can't be any worse rideing back there than rideing in that 58 Fairlane I had that somebody had chopped the top on . As in off with an ax . It was fun just wear a good pair of sun glasses .
The wife & I actually raced each other when we had that thing . Needless to say she blew my doors in with that 64 Galaxie .

A flush mounted gas cap would have looked better. That thing looks like a wart growing out of the quarter panel.

Someone else mentioned it, but when my Father saw this, he said "It was common for us kids to ride in the back of pickup trucks back in the day." Back row seat belts were mandatory in 1966, but I don't see any? They could have done a better job with the gas cap.

I did it in the late 90s and early 00s as a kid.

No doubt, it's just not as common place as it was earlier on. When we went to town in the truck, we were in the back, if the weather was bad we went in moms car.

I haven't checked lately, but just about 5 years ago, it was still legal to ride around with passengers in the back of pickup trucks. They had to remain seated at all times while the vehicle was in motion. The Farm Lobby is very influential in this state.

People talk about seat belt no seat belts ,how dangerous rideing in the back of a truck was/is .( I rode untold mile back there with my dad then as a teenager hitch hiking )

When I was I in about the 3 rd grade a girl in my class was involved in an accident . She & her two siblings were rideing in the back of a truck . Her dad started across a railroad crossing, back then few had warning lights. Train hit the truck both parents killed, all three kids in the dangerous back with no seat belts( luckey for them ) were thrown clear banged & bruised up plus scared for life lived .
So I guess if it's not your time you stay a little longer no matter the lack of mandated safety equipment .

No I did'nt make the story up unfortunately for my class mate & her family .

Wish i knew how many miles i logged in pickup truck beds, we would go camping hours away and ride down the interstate in the truck bed.
My brother fell out the back of a pickup truck trying to hand my dad a beer through the window, thank God they weren't going fast and he just missed a road sign!

When I was a kid riding in the back was not that cool unless you were sitting on the folded down tailgate. Cooler was to be standing on the running board holding onto a mirror or something inside the truck. Five to six miles on the way to school was not a big deal.

A few years back I wanted to buy a 50/51 F1 like my buddy drove in HS. We car pooled to school and four of us sat in that cab. Although the 4 of used to get in the truck with one guy sitting on the lap of the guy in the middle I never realized how tight it was. The guy sitting on the other's lap was also responsible for shifting. 50 Years later I found one and took my kids out to test drive it and damn it was tight!

Yeah I agree. You'd think they could have at least given the gas cap a lttle twist so that the horse logo was upright for the photo shoot. It just looks sloppy.

Goggles? Must have been a chevy guy thing. My Grandpa was p+++ed when I insisted I had to go wash my face after he inadvertently doused me in spray dope we were putting on the apple trees. My job was driving the ford tractor.... No guts, no glory!

He was a "whatever would do the job" guy. He traded a '57 Buick for the ElCamino, when gas prices went up in the early '70s he went through several Pintos, and then a Chevy Cavalier. When he gave me the ElCamino 30 years later, the goggles were still in the glove box, but the leather was all crusty and dried out so I threw them away.
