Hi folks, there is some rust inside my water channels above my door and windows. What do you think about this? Does it seep through into the headliner? I don’t see any leaks from there. And how easy/hard is this to be fixed?
Ok I figured. Good thing I don’t even have a 401k!- what would this even be? A roof skin? Or like patch panels? How would you even repair the panels with overlapping metal?Oh boy..... You probably don't want to hear this, but that's "tap the 401k" expensive.
Very scary.Oh, ya that is a costly repair to do properly. THere are things that may be done to "seal" it temporarily but in the end it will be some work. The below will give you some idea of the work involved.
First step is removal of all the old seam sealer and stripping paint to find out the extent of the rust. Then, cut out the "bad" and weld in the patches. Chances are the rust extends way beyond what you can actually see. :-(Ok I figured. Good thing I don’t even have a 401k!- what would this even be? A roof skin? Or like patch panels? Do the chrome rails on the drip rail come off? I didn’t see any clips. I am scarred that it’s real bad under everything from being unprotected for so long.First step is removal of all the old seam sealer and stripping paint to find out the extent of the rust. Yes. I use a "church key" (bottle opener) with the end covered in PVC tape so as not to scratch them. Typically, you won't find rust underneath them though.Do the chrome rails on the drip rail come off? I didn’t see any clips. I used a small block of wood and a hammer to remove mine, hit them from underneath outward.Do the chrome rails on the drip rail come off? I didn’t see any clips. I am scarred that it’s real bad under everything from being unprotected for so long.
When ever I find a painter. Who is willing to work with me/ let me help. When do you plan to paint the car?
Good idea since I won’t dig into it now. Maybe I’ll look it into it. So what kind of pick? And metal prep-just like primer or?If you don’t want to go full in right now. You could try scraping the broken paint with pick, treat with Metal Prep and touch up with POR15 with a small paint brush. Then paint over with some red automotive paint for UV protection. That might hold it off until you’re ready to dig in, if ever.
I’m gonna attempt to find video on a drip rail removal. Just incase I want to for easy access.Yes. I use a "church key" (bottle opener) with the end covered in PVC tape so as not to scratch them. Typically, you won't find rust underneath them though.
Thank you. I understand
Ditto on this, only I use a paint stick.I used a small block of wood and a hammer to remove mine, hit them from underneath outward.
What has cracked is the seam sealer underneath, allowing water to get between it and the metal. The rust swelled the area and caused more cracking. The sealer should all be removed before attempting to treat any rust. Not sure. Tomorrow I will look into it when it’s day light. I was thinking about removing the drip rails, and painting the top of the part where water sits since the paint is so cracked.
