Should there be any play in the water pump shaft? Had
noise from front on car, grab the fan and had about 1/8"
of movement. Is this normal? This car had a flex fan on it
when I bought it. Are these any good or should I go back
to stock fan with fan clutch?
Thanks, Curtis

1/8 inch is a bit much, likely means the bearings are starting to get tired...time to replace, though I have seen inexpensive rebuilt water pumps with a lot of play befor. With regards to the flex fan, if it has any plastic components, get rid of it...they are very, very dangerous and prone to spontaneous failure. The metal ones, well, thats a different story. Some are good and some are garbage. I would change the pump, then see if the car is running hot or ok.....if ok, don't mess with a good thing. If it's running warm, ensure the fan is between 1/2" to 1" from the radiator, if that's good, a clutch setup is very effective but an electric fan like out of a Mark VIII or CHP Mustang/LTD work very well.
