What does the rod from the firewall side on the steering column to the transmission shift lever do ? Do I need it ? Mine appears to be too long as the slotted end won't go onto the lever on the transmission.

Assuming you have a '70 or newer it's to lock the transmission in reverse when the ignition is turned to the "lock" position.

Thanks Woodchuck........It's a 70. So with the tranny & shifter in park the slotted end of the rod will not hook to the shift lever. Do I need it in reverse to hook the rod up ? Or should I just leave it off completely ?

The lock rod needs to match which transmission you have installed. Clean the lock rod off and look for a stamped casting #, Post that here along with what transmission you are running.

The auto trans needs to be in park to activate this lock. A 4-speed needs to be in reverse. This was to prevent thieves from simply towing the car.
