I went looking at a shop today, it used to be a filling station in the 1960's. It has a two bay garage, with wash down station and a lift. Service area is roughly 28x30. The lift is the type that has the cylinder below ground with the platform/cradle resting at the surface. My question is, are these style of lifts still produced, how reliable are they, and are they safe?

Ah, if there is ground water, the pipes rust out. Then eventually you put oil into the ground. Big environmental hazard and liability.

Right on the money Roddster. A lot of the shops around here had to take them out due to the epa busting thier chops. I do know a few guys that picked them up for next to nothing after they were removed and installed them in their private shops. On the reinstall very place they could they used stainless steel parts. The few Ive seen are very nice lifts.

They're a pain to work on. You have to dig them out.
