Hi,

I recently installed a Classic Auto Air daily driver air conditioning system in my 65 coupe. Today my mechanic serviced it with R134.

It seems like the compressor is always kicking off and on, probably every minute or so, possibly more frequently than that. Is this normal?

He put one pound of coolant in the system, but he was kind of guessing, judging by the pressure readings; since the instructions didn't indicate how much R134 was required.

Do you think everything is working right and serviced right? It sure does blow nice cool air.

Thanks for your time,
John Thomas

Usually a system kicking on and off like that indicates that it is low on freon. You said it was blowing cool, what was the outside temp there today? If it's cool, the ac will blow cool.

If there is a "freeze stat" it can cause the system to shut down and restart in response to the evaporator getting too cold. It prevents the evaporator from freezing over. Typically, the cycling it is from a low pressure switch that is monitoring the freon pressure in the low side of the system (suction). John

It would be a shame to have passed the test but to have missed the lesson.

That's pretty warm. As long as it's blowing cool, I'd say your ok. I have an '87 Aerostar van I converted to 134a last year. It's compressor kicks on and off more than I think it should also. It must have something to do with 134 vs r12. Oh one more thing....When it gets really hot out, the converted systems take a good while to cool off.
