When I bought my 68, acquired a 'treasure trove' of extra parts, including armrests. Picking up this one black 68 driver armrest, it was oily. Wiped it off with mineral spirits. Later, picked it up and it was downright slimey. Repeated it and it was oily again!! Today, put on claw gloves and washed it with laq thinner. It had been dyed with black. In it's lime green splendor, it was still slimey. Wiped it with alcohol, washed it with detergent and a soapy SOS pad, rinsed it and yep, it's slimey!! Water dances off it and it has an odor. Have always known that padded dashes give off a gas but this baby had bled through a vinyl dye, that is usually a lacguer with a urethane additive, plus the original vinyl. My guess is that the foam inside is the culprit. The piece is still supple with no cracks and slight discoloration. Anyone ever experienced this? :(
