Hey guys, very new here so this topic has likely covered already.

Long story but I recently acquired an amazing 69 Mach 1 428 SCJ and the previous owner decided to not put miles on the numbers matching motor and trans, he had a fresh motor built and when I purchased the car I worked out a deal I couldn't say no to for the car and spare motor and spare C6. New Motor and trans have less than 200 miles on them.
Now I have a 68 Fastback that has a crate 302 with less than 1000 miles on it and I'm thinking how much fun would that car be with a 428!!

Anyone dropped a 428 into a 68 Fastback? Any comments?

If only they were as easy to swap as an 8 or 9 inch diff...
I would go for it if you won't drive it much ! !

You bought a 69 that the PO pulled the 428 and C6 out of to "preserve them". You got the 428 and C6 with the car.


You also have a 68 with a crate motor.


You are considering putting the original numbers matching 428 from the '69 in the '68?


If you have a hankering for a big block I would put it in the 69 and keep it together. I would consider the motor that is currently in the '69 as the spare not the 428.

I have seen a '66 with a 460, so I am positive you can fit a 428 in a 67(same basic engine as the 390 after all). As to whether you should do it...that depends...your handling will suffer for sure...and you will want to add some type of shock tower to cowl bracing for the extra weight. Is it worth the extra torque and terrible mileage? I would say no...just add a turbo or SC to get both those things without as much extra weight and fewer fitment problems. I would sell that 428 to someone restoring a big block car at a good profit.

Well, the 1968 GT500 had a 428. :smile2:


I think it depends on what you want to do with your '68 fastback. Working on one big block Mustang is a challenge. Working on two big block Mustangs sounds like stabbing myself in the eye. If I simply wanted more power, I would install a stroked 351 Windsor with Edelbrock Cleveland heads. Less weight. More room. PLENTY of power!

Sorry I should have been clearer, no the previous owner put the original motor and trans back in the car before selling it so it leaves me with the spare 428 he had built, the original numbers matching will now stay in the 69 where it belongs

I had a friend that took the big block out of his '68 for a small block for better handling. That 428 and trans are heavy.
Yes they are. Small blocks (with exception) don’t usually generate that ‘whoa’response from people when you crack the hood, big blocks do because it oooks like you need a sledgehammer and crowbar to get it in there.
The OP, you have a couple nice rides. I don’t think I’d take the small block out if it’s running well. And I’m all about an FE in just about anything.....
Sure would be cool stuck in a 66 Falcon wagon and made to look factory, but that’s me.

Sounds like its time to buy a car that needs just an engine:)

Sometimes that can take a while. I have a (Ewwww Chevy!) Feb '66 427 block and heads in the garage that have been waiting for the right March-July engineless corvette for about 20 years, Someday I'll find it!

Have one of those, been thinking of that as an option as well, it’s also has a 302.

I suggest you send that spare motor down south. I’ll drop it in my 68 and thoroughly test how it fits. It will be perfect since I am planning a GT-500 clone. ;-)

My 67 coupe was an original S code car that had a 428 transplant. The headers were a pain, plugs same story. Starter, don't get me started. It would've been the same with the stock 390.
Ended up selling it and got the current 66 fastback 289, 4 speed. Regular maintenance is no longer painful.
I would keep your fastback a small block and save the 428 for something it fits better in. But that's me. Do what makes YOU happy!!

A 460 in a '66?! Holy cow! What was that like?
