Greetings fellow mustang enthusiasts. Quick introduction? I'm a 42 year vet bush pilot. My first car in 1972 was a turquoise 1965 Mustang. Now, 50 years later, retiring from the bush flying, i picked up a lovely 1965 turquoise mustang. I am desiring to totally restore it. It took me 6 months to make it road worthy, but i have a LOT of questions so thought i would join this "community" of knowledgeable mustang owners... I find it real hard to get good data. Thanks for allowing me the privilege...
I am somewhat internet illiterate as i worked in the amazon jungle, so hope i dont embarrass myself.
QUESTION? The car has a 2 speed automatic in it. it also has a clutch pedal hidden under the carpet, so it must have been a standard. Am i crazy to think i can find a good manual trans and all the linkages to put the standard back in? and "where do i start"?

Welcome to VMF!!
Sounds like you actually have an early THREE speed cruise-o-matic, and you're driving at the notch right behind neutral, so if you'll pull it back one more notch you should get a 1-2-3 shift out of that box.
i have experimented- i am thinking it is a falcon two speed, as i have messed with the shifter.. i may be wrong, another local mechanic here said that falcon had a two speed that would fit and may be what is under there now... BUT it also has a constant leak and two shops have not been able to stop it, so that is why i am hoping i can change back to a manual transmission. (the clutch pedal is still in the car). I just can't find the data and have not had any success at finding a transmission and without the data, i don't know what else is involved (linkages, etc) that i will need to get to do the job.

Post a pic of the door tag so we can see what should be on the car. Adding a 3 speed, 4 speed or modern 5 speed is quite straight forward and the parts are relatively easy to find although not always cheap.
THE DOOR TAG is very hard to read.. i am posting it here. I have been trying to find parts and information by the use of the serial number 5F07T724932
Motor vehicle Fixture Gas Auto part Metal
but even on a VIN number site that i paid for, they could not find info on it :(

IT LOOKS LIKE I STRUCK GOLD joining this group.. I dont want to "bother" but i guess i can wrap up the questions by saying, after spending a few thousand and the transmission still leaking, and knowing the car came with standard, (clutch pedal still in the car) and having ZERO experience on transmission work, DO YOU ALL THINK IT POSSIBLE to change back to a STANDARD TRANS? AND the second question- where do i find one? I will need all the linkages, bell housing, etc. I have had little to no luck finding anything online -- She's a sweet running car though!! love the straight 6.

Welcome! Beautiful car. Are you wanting to keep the car original or thinking about upgrades? The car came with a 3-speed manual. Modern Driveline has everything you would need to swap in a T5 5 speed which might be a good choice if you plan to drive a lot at highway speeds. Is the car still a 6 cylinder or has it been swapped for a V8?

Also, take a look at this:

WOW, A WEALTH of info... I probably goofed on the transmission thing yes... i have been using the knotch after neutral... thanks,.. AND YES- it has the 200 straight 6 and YES i have heard of this T5 but thought it was only good for the 8 cylinder,.. I will try with Modern Driveline (thanks for the tip!!) I do not need to go back the three speed. but just need to get everything from the bell housing back to the drive shaft except the pedal... Thanks

The T5 is an excellent choice for the 6 cyl engine. The extra gears really help with the narrow power band of the 200 engine and make it much more fun to drive. BTW find a new shop, no excuse they couldn’t solve the leak.

You need to find out a little about your engine to proceed. Earlier 6 cylinders used 5 bolts to attach the bell housing. Later engines were changed to use the same 6 bolt set up as the V8. That will determine which bell housing and clutch set up you need. You will want to find a T5 from a Fox body (79 -93) Mustang. The T5s are classified by a major design change that added friction clutches and other modifucations to handle more power. The newer T5s are called “World Class” and the earlier are “Non-World Class”. For your application either will work fine. Do not get a T5 from another car as it will likely not fit.
thanks for the wealth of information!! All of you in this group have been an immense help. I've been an airplane mechanic all my life but we dont do transmissions (ha ha) so this is all new for me. Have a great day

Add me to the list of Turquoise hardtops too. Mine had a C4 that I converted to 4 speed. The hardest part was finding a toploader. I searched as best I could for 2 years and just gave up. My son-in-law who is a hound dog when it comes to scrounging parts came across one locally. I bagged it for $340. Welcome to the forum.
thanks for the info!
important detail!!
