When timing my car using a timing light, I can set initial timing to 12-14d btdc without pinging - according to the timing marks on the damper. This is a 65 289. On inspection, I can see some small cracking on the rubber portion of the damper. Is it common for them to slip/wear? Does this sound like what has happened to mine? And if so, do I need to replace?

My 68 289 had slipped quite a bit, sometime about 10 years ago I recently discovered.

I always wondered why my dad said "just use the chalk mark" and not the actual marks.
