I have a 66 289. Can the timing chain cover be removed without removing the pil pan? Looks like just remove 4 of the oil pan bolts at the front and it should come loose. But then I was thinking about the oil pan gasket. What if it rips off when I remove the timing chain gasket. My engine detail is growing and growing. I removed the water pump and it looks in bad shape but still works. But I'm goping to replace it. Then I'm thinking well I have the pump off I guess I should replace the timing chain as well.

Yes it can ... just going to take a bit more care as you center it on the balancer, tighten it againist the block and pan. I tend to press down then back to first compress the large rubber seal to the pan.
