Hello to all! I’m new to the site and tend to show my ignorance on occasion.
What I’m working with is a ‘65 289, 2brl carb, all stock except I’ve installed Petronix ignition because I’m too lazy to keep replacing/adjusting points as it’s a daily driver.
Question: can I improve performance by advancing the timing above the 6 degrees btdc WITHOUT harming anything or causing it to run hotter? MUCH THANKS in advance: I appreciate your time.

Advance the timing and take the car for a ride. If you hear knocking under hard acceleration, backup 1-2 degree. If not, further increase the timing.
You have to drive the car to hear the knocking. It is also a good idea to check the total timing at high (3500-4000) rpm.
