prefect metal!!! No rust at all. You can still see the silver metal under the original black paint! I was, and still am, so happy I don't have to get new floor pans. But man, when I pulled the carpet up, what a stench! It smelled like a backed up sewer, mixed with pond water, mud, mold, yuck! But, at least the pans are in good shape. We are planning on getting most of the interior out by Monday or Tuesday, then I can see what the rest of it is like.

I understand your joy. My '67 'vert pans only have minor surface rust because of a heater core that leaked for years. A little wire brushing and some rust converter and they should last another 34 years. I was already dreading replacing them before I pulled the carpet.

For starters, a carpet that smells like that means that the underlayment has been holding water frequently - which probably means you've got some cowl or windshield leaks. Secondly, I looked up your bio and, according to your webpage, the original color of this car is Silver jade. That is the color that your floorpans should be, rather than black.

I would check your car out very seriously for water leaks before replacing the carpet.

Congrats on the floors being solid - that's fairly rare. But if the carpet is stinking, then you've got a leak somewhere......keep those floors nice by finding your leak now before you go any further. DIckson

Yeah, there is a cowl leak, so I was expecting a ton of rust. We are going to fix that soon, hopefully.

Darn, I was hoping the floor pans were in orginal shape....maybe they were just painted over, not replaced.....doubt it though. hehe. Also, here's the deal with the smell. The car has always been garaged, so it never had the wet carpet problem....but, when we first got it, it sat in our driveway for about 3 days, while the garage was getting cleaned out and prepped. Well, on the third day, it rained-hard. So, that was why the carpet smelled. I couldn't get all of the carpet dry, and wasn't ready to strip the interior yet. Lucky I didn't have to wait any longer, could have caused some major rust problems. Anyways, thanks for the info.

I know the feeling, I was pleasantly shocked when I first lifted up my 66's carpets only to find a bit of surface rust in the front footwells. This cleaned up excellently with a wire brush on a drill. No holes!!

Saves a ton of money too hey?!

Hope the rest is of the same quality....

Good luck on the project!
