Toploader Downshift Issue

6292 Views 49 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  silverblueBP
I rebuilt a wide ratio TL last winter which is now in my car behind a new engine and clutch assembly. The trans shifts beautifully up through all gears at any RPM. It downshifts very smoothly fourth to third. It will not downshift third to second without grinding excessively or at all, or second to first. When I drop below say 10 MPH, it will downshift with no issues. Car not moving or not running, it glides into all gears up and down with no issues.

I spoke to Dan Williams where I bought the kit from and he suggested driving for 500 miles, changing the gear oil and seeing if it gets any better. I have a couple threads here saying Toploaders really don't get any better than day one after a rebuild. It is what it will be.

Thoughts?

"........ However, don't show up before noon because you will be waiting. He works noon to midnight and beyond.

11:00 AM his time. I left at 5:30 AM CST.
Hard to tell, but those grooves are not supposed to be there.

This is what it looks like in the bottom of the case...pretty huh?

And here is the dog.

I forgot to take pics of the 2nd and 3rd gears.

Turns out, I only made a couple small mistakes, other than that, I had the trans assembled properly.
This sounds exactly like me...living and learning though. Good luck with it Patrick, I'm certainly down here cheering you one!

Ditto my friend. Let me know if you want to borrow that carb.
Got the car back together this afternoon. Went for a decent drive. Shifts waaaaaay better both up and down. On to the next issue. Still needs some carb tuning. Blowing fuel out the front bowl vent tube. Never seen that before. Running the same stock fuel pump I was before. So don't know what the issue is there.

Debris in float needle

Float too high. ( forgot what carb you have , but, I know all Holley's run better w/ float level lower than Holley says is correct, just saying..)

I forgot to add, I spoke with Dan this afternoon to tell him how well the trans shifted...I thought he would be elated. No...being the perfectionist he is, he explained to me he has been perplexed ever since I left his place...has not slept, and has only hoped I would call today to give him an update. Turns out, since we did in 4-5 hours (which probably really only took 2 hours of real work) instead of his normal 5 day trans R&R, he left off one very important and final step which he clearly spells out in his own instructions. Before he puts the lid on the trans, he turns it upside down to make sure nothing falls out and there are no unaccounted for parts. Well, during the rush of the build, we did actually misplace one of the shift rail rod detents. He just pulled one out of his hundreds, but he left off that final step of making sure nothing was in the bottom of the case.

Soooooo...tomorrow I am going jack the car up, drain the trans fluid, check the magnetic drain plug, and pour the fluid back in it. Why you ask. Because that 70 year old man took the time to do in 4-5 hours what he normally he does in a 4-5 days to get a Toploader transmission perfect...and so he can rest knowing he once again built a perfect Ford Toploader.

Thanks Z, will be checking that tomorrow at Sean's recommendation as well. I have a Sean Murphy Stage 2 Holley 650 DP. He suspects trash in the needle or too high fuel pressure. He tested at 6.5 psi. I can't imagine my stock fuel pump delivering more than that. The 4100 did fine with it. I also spoke with a couple other of the Holley super tuners and they suggested as you have that Holley's really like the floats a tad bit lower than what is normally recommended. So I will be making those adjustments as well.
My old DP had that happen at the track. Crap keeping the needle open.
