New to car restoration. 65 Fastback. Is it ok to use a paint/rust stripper wheel on my transmission to help clean it? I would only use on the sides, staying away from all connections and end plate?

I would not. Any sort of abrasion wheel will permanently alter he surface texture. The original finish was bare. On a manual, that means cast-iron. Degrease, with a stiff and parts cleaner. Spray with "cast iron" paint if you want it to look clean and new. Auto transmissions were aluminum, except the FMX, which was both. Oh, and the CJ C6.
