Mercury switch. When the decklid opens the mercury runs down and makes a connection and turns the light on. Close the decklid and it goes off. There should already be a plug for it on your wireharness near the passenger side hinge.

It's suppose to have a build in Mercury switch. If your car was equiped with the Courtesy Light Group, you should have a Mercury switch light under the hood too.
