This model will "supposedly" work for either the 157 or the 164. Auto or standard. Not sure how that works but that is how it is listed. Will keep researching.
I have a '66 289, manual transmission with a 164 tooth flywheel. I have a Tuff-stuff mini starter that is supposed to work with a SBF w/ manual, but it did not, so I went to the local chain store, got a factory replacement starter, still grind and free spin.
On a whim, I exchanged that with one for an automatic trans and that worked with no issue and is still in the car. So for whatever reason, my '66 manual 3spd car, takes an automatic transmission starter. All I can think is the automatic starter has a longer throw.
My car does have an aftermarket lightweight billet flywheel. The engine is 10:1 and the factory starters are heavy and are a pain to install with long tubes. I may be interested in the small block starter.
