Trying to change upper ball joint on 1970 mustang. But when putting the ball joint on and trying to tighten to specs and bolt was spinning and I was not paying attention and ripped the boot. Never had this happen before - bad ball joint? Any advice appreciated.

Replace the boot. When beginning to tighten the nut, put either Channelocks or a C-clamp between the spindle and control arm to squeeze together and force the taper of the ball-stud to seat into the spindle's hole.

Got it. still had spring retracted too.
