Will a .496 lift cam in a 289 bind my springs? I don't need to create more problems for myself when I change my cam.

With that much lift, you are definitely going to need new springs. Stock 289 / 302 cams had lift in the .360 range.

You are also going to want to check guide to retainer clearance as well.

You best bet would be to get the complete cam/lifter/springs/retainers/locks kit offered by most manufacturers.

I seem to recall reading in the Off Highway Parts reprint that spring bind starts to become a problem in the .500 neighborhood. You might want to consider pulling back about one notch on your cam ambitions.

I agree with Hemikiller. I would also suggest Comp Cams roller tiped rockers, they have a longer slot at the bottom so that near full lift they won't hit the rocker studs.
