I have a 66 coup with many GT features, all original, but it's not really a GT. It has the stripes, emblems, exhaust trumpets, 140 speedometer and GT gas cap. It doesn't have the hi-po engine, extra headlights or tach. I'm really not sure what I have. The 5th Vin letter is A, so is that considered an A code Mustang? Tranny is a 3 speed manual with a floor shift. Also how do I know if it's an early 66? I've noticed some brake parts seem to be for an early one. Stuff like master cylinder needing 15/16" parts. I'm the second owner and have had it since 1974.

If you could please Post your Driver's Door Dataplate, That would help out a lot. (You can cover the last three digits of your VIN# if you wish...)

Also, What Plant was your car built?? What's the 2nd Digit in your VIN#???!?? If its a Metuchen Built, NJ car, The car will also have a Factory Buck Tag as well where you can tell the car is a "REAL" GT.

Being an "A" Code car (if it is), would definitely put it in "Possible GT" Territory.

Does the car have Front Disc Brakes??!??

There's also a VIN decoder in the official shop manual for the car. If you don't have that (which I'd be amazed by since you've owned the car since 1974) then you should pick it up.

Thanks for the info. I guess 3.00:1 rear axle is what makes it go 140. I've seen that a few times out in Western Kansas. Although I've owned the car a long time, I never drove it after 1976. It's been in indoor storage for 43 years. Life got in the way.

I'm moving/leaning towards a "Real Factory GT"...

If your car has all of these...Then it's a factory GT....

Does it have these?!?? 1. Residual Valve underneath the Brake Distribution Block.......2. Dual Exhaust Reinforcement Brackets and Reinforcement Plates Behind the Rear Seats.....and 3. Factory GT Dual Exhaust Crush Tubes inside the Rear Frame Rails....4. GT Steering Box...

A '66 should have the 140mph speedo regardless of GT or not. It was only in '65 where the car had to be either a GT or deluxe interior car to get the 5 gauge cluster. The Rallypac was an option (for a tach) and wasn't GT specific. The fog lights were also optional, although SHOULD be present on a true GT. Many were added later too. A lot of GT stuff is reproduced or added.

A codes could be GT's. Heck even C code cars could be GT's.

You'd have to do some more sleuthing, as the vin and door tag don't indicate GT status. Also, many GT's were done by the dealerships, and a lot of the parts were added after the fact. Its a muddled area...

Does it have the floor pan reinforcements under the rear seat for the exhaust mounts? Does it have a 16:1 steering box? I don't have the numbers handy, but they also had different springs and few other things suspension wise. There was also a way to tell, based on how the wiring was routed and holes drilled for the fog lights in the rad support.

January 66 would put it's build date sort of in the middle as they started building 66's in late '65 (sometime around august/september if memory serves me correctly)

I'm pretty sure the 3.00 axle was installed on most 3spd cars and automatics. The 4spds and Hipo cars getting different ratios.

Yes, I meant to correct him on that as well before. ALL 1966 Mustangs had the 5-Dial Cluster and 140MPH Speedo.....even the 6cyl cars... This was also the only year that this happened! 1966 was quite a year! Total Performance!...was the motto...LOL..

Of course I am also biased....(Sig Pic)....

There was no such thing as a "Dealer GT".......a Decades long rumor....that never seemed to die...

Yes, You could by most of the GT Parts and add them...but that's where the "myth" dies... It was only most of the GT Parts....Not all...

#1. Yes, on residual pressure valve. Master cylinder and valve below it look just like the ones in the photo.
#2 & 3. Difficult to verify at the moment. My shop is quite crowded around the rear of the car.
#4. Not sure about 16:1 steering gear box. All I know is it is not power steering and is 4 turns lock to lock.


So not all GT models had the 271 hp 289?

I think you're getting close to a GT as well. The exhaust reinforcements and crush tubes could push you over the finish line...

Check lock to lock again, I think it's 3 3/4. Going to check mine now.

You can force it to 4 so I think you have the correct steering box (no way will it go past 4).

Before you get all giddy about having a GT:

1 - You’re looking for a Kelsey Hayes proportioning valve, not a residual valve, line lock, etc.
2 & 3 - These items have been available in reproduction for a few years. Not definitive indicators.
4 - The same steering box was available with the special handling package. My C code with the special handling package has an HCC-AX box, and it surely isn’t a GT. Not conclusive.
5 - Do your due diligence. Make sure the “facts” you read on internet forums are indeed facts.

Ah, no. 65-66 GT standard was the 289 4V Premium Fuel engine. The 289 High Performance was optional. pprince is right, the C code GT was a 67 thing. And I have never seen one.
So not all GT models had the 271 hp 289?
No, in fact it was quite rare. And the reverse was true, too, you could get a 289 High Performance engine in a non-GT Mustang, in any of the three body styles.

That's right.... There were a few "K-Code" 1965-1966 cars that were produced that were not GT cars....though rare, They exist. Knew a friend one time that had a Factory K-code Hardtop....and the rest of the car was just a "Plain Jane" Honey Gold '65 Hardtop...
