Tell us a bit about your water pump and why a rebuilt from Autozone, Parts America, NAPA etal wouldn't work for you....

Usually there is a local rebuilder in most average sized cities...like Starr Rebuilders in Fresno near where I live...who can do a good job on your core if you have time to wait...

One reason that I could foresee rebuilding my water pump, is because the replacement ones you get at napa, autozone, etc. are cast iron. Where as the one I've got, the housing is aluminum. But in all reality, when this goes, I'll be getting one from milodon or edelbrock.

I've been to Pep Boys, Autozone, and Kragen and the only aluminum water pump that they had was for the hipo cars and they were totally different. There was no backing plate on them.

Ya, let me know if you come up with something.

Sorry, that animal doesn't exist in my experience....

I've never seen a factory aluminum pump for a 289/302 that had a backing plate...

There may have been a special pump for the later Shelby's that did but I've never seen one...

You may want to ask Charles Turner or Jeff Speegle....

Is this a concours restoration??

You didn't say what type of pump...aluminum or cast iron and I couldn't find any info in your bio on your car....

Most pumps I've purchased in the past have just been a rebuilt factory pump....they had the Ford logo and numbers on them.....you can always go to the parts store and take a look at one...

This one that I have isn't a ford factory water pump. It's made by someone else, i think GMB. All the ones they now make are cast iron.

Rob,

Basically your water pump is just a small centrifugal pump with a ball bearing supporting the shaft and impeller and an unbalanced mechanical shaft seal to keep the coolant inside...

If you have access to a press and know a local bearing house and pump supplier, you can easily rebuild it yourself...

If you want to mess with it and need any particulars, let me know...
