First off, in reference to my earlier post, Black Permatex works great on water pumps. Now here's the weird part.

I go to Autozone and get a Fel-Pro water pump gasket for my car.

I have an early 289 with aluminum water pump with NO backing plate, so that's the gasket they give me. I get home & it is completely wrong. So I go back and look at the gasket for a CAST IRON pump WITh a backing plate & it's the right one.
How can that possibly be?
The same thing happened when I ordered a timing chain cover from NPD. I ordered the one for my car & it comes as the one for a pump with a backing plate. It's like no one has the correct water pump parts for an ealry 65 289.

Well, it sounds like they are confused, you could get either pump in 65. Since it was a "running change", Change Level 7, there were surely cars with both on the line at the same time.

The gaskets, of course, are not the same at all.
